Juvenes Translatores 2026-2027

Invitation to take part in the EU translation contest for secondary-school students: Juvenes Translatores

Dear teacher,

The 20th edition of the Juvenes Translatores translation contest, aimed at 17-year-old secondary-school students, will take place on 26 November 2026.

Register your school between 1 September and 12 October. Your students will then have a chance to be selected to take part in this highly popular competition – and one of them could win a trip to Brussels to discover the work of translators at the institutions of the European Union.

Every year, around 3,000 students from across the EU translate a one-page text from any of the EU’s 24 official languages into another of these languages.

The competition aims to promote language learning and translation, while encouraging young people to pursue careers in languages. Learning languages helps young people acquire essential skills for promoting mobility, cooperation and mutual understanding across borders.

This year, the texts to be translated will focus on the theme: “Erasmus+: 40 years bringing people together and opening minds.”

The translations will be assessed by European Commission translators, who will select one winner in each EU Member State. The 27 winners will be invited to Brussels next spring, accompanied by one teacher and up to two parents, to attend the award ceremony at the Commission’s headquarters.

In addition, students whose translations stand out for their quality but who are not selected as winners will receive a special mention. Next spring, they will be invited to take part in online workshops with language and translation students from universities belonging to the European Master’s in Translation (EMT) network. This will give them an opportunity to learn more about language and translation studies and the career opportunities they offer.

I strongly encourage you to give your students the opportunity to take part in this EU-wide competition. For further information, please consult the attached information sheet.

Due to the growing popularity of the competition, unfortunately we are unable to allow all interested schools to participate. If your school is not selected, European Commission translators based in your country may offer you another activity as part of Juvenes Translatores. Registered schools will receive further information by email.

Puberty: My body is changing!

Puberty is a time when many changes take place: the body changes, emotions may change, and relationships with oneself and with others can develop.

In this workshop, the children learn about the physical, emotional and social changes associated with puberty. We talk about, among other things, changes to the body, menstruation and erections, hygiene, emotions, self-image, relationships with others and the first questions about falling in love, attraction and sexuality.

We also talk about gender stereotypes and beauty ideals. The children have the opportunity to think critically about the expectations and ideas conveyed by their environment, the media and social networks.

We also explain the basics of reproduction and how a pregnancy develops in a simple, age-appropriate way, and explain the connection between puberty, sexuality and reproduction. We also address the fact that sexuality and reproduction are not the same thing.

The children’s questions are at the centre of the session. We work on the principle that every question deserves an answer. The children can ask their questions freely and receive honest, respectful answers that are appropriate to their age and level of understanding.

The aim is to help children better understand their bodies and emotions, to question assumptions and stereotypes, and to develop a positive self-image, so they can go through puberty with more confidence and autonomy.

Friem Welt – Metalog Spill

Dës kulturell Simulatioun ënnersicht d’Entwécklung vu (kulturellen) Perspektiven. An enger spannender Erfarung ginn als éischt zwou Minikulturen entwéckelt. Hir Charakteristike ginn da verglach a beliicht. Dëse Kontrast ënnersträicht, datt de kulturellen Afloss haaptsächlech mat Wäerter an ënnerlecher Astellunge verbonnen ass.

Prozedur:

An zwou separate Raimlechkeeten huet d’Hallschent vum Grupp d’Aufgab, hir eege kulturell Identitéit no spezifesche Richtlinnen z’entwéckelen. Dës kulturell Mikrokosmosen hunn hir eege Ritualer, Wäerter a Bräich. Duerno kreéieren d’Participanten aus all Kultur e “Reesguide” fir déi aner. Dës Simulatioun vun zwou Kulture weist der Grupp lieweg, wéi eng “kulturell Lens” geformt gëtt.

Ecopoly – Metalog Spill

Datt d’Ressourcenverwaltung fir eis all vun zentraler Bedeitung ass, weist sech a verschiddene Kontexter an eiser Gesellschaft. Dëst betrëfft souwuel d’Ökosystemer wéi och d’Geschäfter. Ecopoly mécht d’Gestioun vu knappe Ressourcë konkret a fëllt dat abstrakt Konzept vun der ‘Nohaltegkeet’ mat konkreten Erfarungen. Dëst erméiglecht eng Diskussiounen iwwert Wäerter.

Ëmsetzung:

D’Ecos bewunnen e puer Planéiten an engem Sonnesystem. All Planéit beméit sech, seng Versuergung mat Ökopozon ze maximiséieren. Dëst schaaft awer de Risiko, datt verschiddene Planéiten ze vill vum Kuch fir sech huelen, mat der Konsequenz vun hirem Ënnergang… An dat ass e Wake-up Call!

Team Navigator – Jeu Metalog

D’Aféierung vun engem Cours ass dacks de Schlëssel zum Erfolleg vum ganzen Dag. Dëst erlaabt Iech, d’Presentatioun vun der Struktur vum Cours spilleresch an en interaktive Modüll ëmzewandelen.

Dës éischt Phase vum Cours gëtt domat zu enger wäertvoller Teamerfahrung fir Är Participanten. Mam Team Navigator gitt Dir d’Basis fir e kooperatiivt Verhalen a baut vun Ufank un e staarkt Gefill vun Teamgeescht op; oder Dir kënnt en als elegant Aféierung an d’Themen “Teamwork” a “Leadership” benotzen.

Wéi een et benotzt:

D’Participantë stinn an engem Krees ronderëm den Team Navigator. All Persoun hëlt eng oder zwou Schnéier an d’Hand. D’Zil ass et, de Stëft an der Mëtt iwwer e Blat Pabeier ze manövréieren an eng x-belibeg Form ze zeechnen. Et ass och méiglech, e Labyrinth nozezeechnen. D’Schnéier sollte wärend der ganzer Aktivitéit gespaant bleiwen.

KommunikARTio – Metalog Spill

Den Ausdrock ‘KommunikARTio’ ass eng Kombinatioun vu Kommunikatioun, Konscht a Kaart. Dëst Léierszenario ëmfaasst eng breet Pallette vun Themen. Änlech wéi e Rätsel gëtt der Grupp e Problem presentéiert, dat nëmme mat der Konscht vun der Kommunikatioun geléist ka ginn.

Prozedur:

D’Participante sëtze mat verbonnenen Aen an engem enke Krees. D’Aufgab ass et, zesummen d’Faarf an d’Form vun den zwou feelende Kaarten eleng duerch mëndlech Kommunikatioun ze bestëmmen. Den Trainer gëtt nëmmen Informatiounen iwwer d’Faarf; wann e Participant eng Kaart an d’Luucht hält, gëtt d’Faarf opgedeckt.

SysTeam – Metalog Spill

Eng beweeglech Plattform mat Figuren drop ass op engem Stativ an d’Gläichgewiicht bruet. Dëst fänkt direkt d’Opmierksamkeet vum Grupp op. Eng Metapher mat verschiddenen Interpretatiounen entsteet: eppes an d’Gläichgewiicht bréngen, Gläichgewiicht schafen, Interaktiounen erliewen, awer och mat Risiko a Verännerung ëmgoen.

Ëmsetzung:

Als Formateur oder Formatriceass Är Kreativitéit onbegrenzt wat d’Zuel an d’Aart vu Presentatiounen ugeet, déi Dir erstelle kënnt.

Pipeline Spill – Metalog

D’Pipeline Spill bitt eng exzellent Metapher fir d’Wichtegkeet vun der Kommunikatioun an d’Koordinatioun an engem Grupp ze weisen an ass voller Action!

De Ball, dee bspw. e gemeinsam ausgeschaffte Projet representéiert, däerf net ugepak ginn; d’ “Transportgefier” ass d’Pipeline, e System vun hallwe Plastikschläich, déi d’Participanten nëmmen no spezifeschen am viraus fest geluede Reegelen dierfe benotzen. D’Schülerinnen a Schüler begräife wéi wichteg Organisatioun a Koordinatioun si fir gemeinsam en Zil ze erreechen.

Metalog-Tools ginn a Projetmanagement-Workshops benotzt oder fir Presentatiounen oder de Cours ze verbesseren, sou datt se de Fokus méi ob d’erliewe setzen . Dëst erlaabt Iech Är Gruppen ze inspiréieren andeems Dir méi emotional Experienze beim vermëttele vu Wësse mat abaut.

Making a mockumentary

  • The pupils produce a fictional documentary based on a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of their own choosing
  • The educational programme combines specific knowledge, factual information and (local and global) challenges in the context of the SDGs with a practical approach (producing film footage for a fictional documentary, including editing, assembly and finalisation)
    • One or more people take on the role of investigative journalists in front of the camera.
    • Depending on the topic, the pupils can, for example, stage interviews with friends or experts.
    • The fictional story is enriched with well-founded factual knowledge (facts, statistics, academic debates on the topic, etc.).
  • The result mimics the style of investigative documentaries whilst simultaneously promoting critical thinking and media literacy.

Learning objectives

  • To learn about the relevant SDG through the use of documentary storytelling.
  • To understand how documentary films construct narratives.
  • To learn to distinguish between (scientific) facts, opinions and fiction.
  • To critically reflect on everyday (individual) consumption patterns.
