‘The Forest and I’ is an immersive educational programme that encourages students to learn through direct contact with nature. Through sensory experiences, field observations, scientific activities and moments of reflection, the students develop their curiosity, their understanding of the living world and their ability to make connections between what they have learnt in the classroom and their environment.
Based on an active, scientific and experiential approach to learning, the programme contributes to the implementation of Luxembourg’s secondary school curriculum, particularly in the fields of natural sciences (biology), education for sustainable development and cross-curricular skills, by enabling pupils to:
- discover, observe and understand the characteristics of the living world;
- deepen their scientific knowledge through hands-on experiments;
- understand the unity, diversity and interdependence of living organisms;
- explore how ecosystems function and the interactions within them;
- develop attitudes of respect, responsibility and conservation towards nature
The programme also enables students to discover the positive effects of nature on physical and mental health, whilst understanding the close links between human health, biodiversity and the proper functioning of ecosystems. It thus provides a concrete illustration of how human health is intimately linked to that of the living world.
Beyond subject-specific learning, the programme also promotes the development of essential skills such as observation, critical thinking, cooperation, communication, personal reflection and experiential learning.
